[06:56:41] <buildmaster> Hi abaumann!
[06:56:42] <buildmaster> !rq abaumann
[06:56:43] <phrik> buildmaster: <abaumann> I remember the old saying in archlinux: "core" is for the things we need to boot the system and build the system. So meson is now part of core?
[06:57:01] <abaumann> thePiGrepper: why I would like to do this in a C library, mainly speed.
[06:57:40] -!- tyzoid has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
[06:57:42] <abaumann> elibrokeit: I'm perfectly happy with --printsrcinfo, don't get me wrong.. Its the most important interface between upstream and our scripts.
[06:58:12] <elibrokeit> it's just slow?
[06:58:32] <abaumann> On old machines, that is. ;-)
[06:58:32] -!- girls has quit [Ping timeout: 250 seconds]
[06:58:50] <elibrokeit> yeah, forking out to hundreds of bash processes...
[06:59:04] <elibrokeit> abaumann: there is something which could speed it up
[06:59:37] <abaumann> Do it only once when PKGBUILD changes in git? :-)
[06:59:56] <elibrokeit> https://paste.xinu.at
[06:59:57] <phrik> Title:mksrcinfo (at paste.xinu.at)
[07:00:13] <elibrokeit> much less overhead if you know the PKGBUILD is supposed to be valid
[07:00:26] <elibrokeit> some it uses libmakepkg and doesn't do linting
[07:00:30] <elibrokeit> *since
[07:00:49] <abaumann> ah. this looks nice. :-)
[07:01:06] <abaumann> modular programming in shell. :-)
[07:02:22] <abaumann> the remark "best and worst decision" was a more philosophical one: bash is always there. It's simple. But it has the drawback that people can get too creative when actually they should just use pkgver as what it is: a variable definition with a constant.
[07:03:29] <abaumann> If you use a domain specific language (like spec for Redhat/SuSE), then you can better define what exactly a PKGBUILD file is, but it has the drawback that you have to embedd shell syntax again into another higher-level grammar. And you have to write special tools for it (preferably in C and not in Python)

[07:03:44] <phrik> buildmaster: <tyzoid> sangy: I wonder if anyone has init=/usr/bin/emacs before
[07:04:10] <elibrokeit> abaumann: actually I uploaded it to https://github.com
[07:04:11] <phrik> Title:dotfiles/mksrcinfo at master · eli-schwartz/dotfiles · GitHub (at github.com)
[07:04:44] <abaumann> sweet. You have plans to put in into pacman-contrib later?
[07:04:53] <abaumann> or pacman itself
[07:05:13] <abaumann> You definitely have a tester. :-)
[07:06:05] <elibrokeit> ehm, not likely
[07:06:20] <elibrokeit> well, definitely not core pacman
[07:07:57] <elibrokeit> abaumann: OTOH I do have plans to make checkupdates better...
[07:08:28] <elibrokeit> I wanna add a --download option to make retrieving the cache files just as safe as checking for updates

[14:46:58] <buildmaster> !rq abaumann
[14:46:58] <phrik> buildmaster: <abaumann> canary no. 2 is back on testing. :-)
[14:47:05] <deep42thought> Hi abaumann!
[14:47:15] <abaumann> Hi deep42thought
[14:47:32] <abaumann> Just tried to update a machine: I get: :: installing gcc-libs (8.2.1+20180831-1.7) breaks dependency 'gcc-libs=7.3.1+20180312-2.0' required by gcc
[14:47:42] <abaumann> So, why is gcc being downgraded to 7.3.1?
[14:47:53] <deep42thought> err, let me check
[14:48:05] <abaumann> oh: gcc --version?
[14:48:09] <abaumann> gcc (GCC) 7.3.1 20180312
[14:48:22] <deep42thought> it needs to be moved from testing to core, it seems
[14:48:36] <abaumann> ah. so we are still on 7.3.1 in stable.
[14:48:41] <deep42thought> yes
[14:48:41] <abaumann> yeah. makes sense.
[14:48:49] <deep42thought> /mnt/archlinux32/i686/core/gcc-7.3.1+20180312-2.0-i686.pkg.tar.xz
[14:48:49] <deep42thought> /mnt/archlinux32/i686/core/gcc-libs-8.2.1+20180831-1.7-i686.pkg.tar.xz
[14:48:49] <deep42thought> /mnt/archlinux32/i686/testing/gcc-8.2.1+20180831-1.7-i686.pkg.tar.xz
[14:49:28] <deep42thought> maybe, it's just an intermediate state - I'm currently running a couple of "db-update -f" and "db-update -p"s
[14:49:38] * deep42thought adds another call to db-update
[14:51:10] <abaumann> ah. this can be. I'm usually good at doing things exactly in the wrong moment.. :-)
