[22:50:14] <void09> hey so I got a pentium 233 laptop that doesn't have any external bootable option. I pulled the hard drive out and I got an ata-usb adapter I can use to access it. How would I go putting archlinux32 on it ?
[22:50:40] <void09> Well I think it can do compact flash boot, but I can't be bothered to find that stuff
[22:52:15] <void09> Can i boot archlinux 32 on a modern system and just install in the usb-attached hard drive I wonder :-?
[22:53:34] <void09> also any chance of updating the 486 iso ? Last time i tried i had to spend half an hour figuring how to bypass all the broken keyrings and stuff
[23:09:28] <bill-auger> that computer almost certainly can boot from CD or DVD - even if you need to buy one. that is your simplest option by far

[23:12:51] <void09> bill-auger: perhaps, a pcmcia one ? Otherwise i'd have to open it up and plug it in ATA port, that is if it even has a second one, doubt it
[23:13:03] <void09> might as well get a CF card
[23:14:07] <void09> I found some way that allowed me to boot in a linux even if it had windows on it, by rewriting the boot sector. But that path is gone, I can no longer boot it after a failed win95-> xp update
[23:17:23] <bill-auger> oh its a laptop - a laptop from that era which did not come with and can not house an internal CD player is peculiar - if it can boot from flash card, thats your best option
[23:18:22] <void09> even the floppy came external, with a proprietary cable
[23:18:26] <void09> which i don't have
[23:18:50] <void09> I am thinking, 32bit linux vm, forward the usb device that holds the hard drive, try and see if it can install on that
[23:23:27] <bill-auger> IIRC you would need to ensure that the GRUB config does not refrer to the disk as UUID but as device file /dev/sda1, b/c IIRC UUID will be different in the laptop vs the VM
[23:26:28] <bill-auger> same applies to /etc/fstab if there is one
[23:30:22] <void09> Hm ok, I take not of that. Managed to get hdd running in vm

[23:43:06] <void09> any idea ?
[23:43:25] <void09> I remember some key ring errors the previous time I tried, because of the outdated iso. Iso hasn't been updated since..
[23:57:57] <void09> hm ai helped me, temporary pacman.conf in /tmp
